Pillage By Day, Contemplate In The Evening

Even The Vikings Played Nicely Sometimes

It is not breaking news that intelligent strategic masterminds can also be bloodthirsty landgrabbers.  But even the most hardened and world weary wizards might be surprised to learn that the Vikings not only played chess, but took them on their war wagering voyages.

It was not quite chess as we know it today, but it was definitely a close relative.  We know this because in 1831 someone discovered perfectly preserved and beautifully carved chess pieces.  Today they are known as the Lewis Chessmen and are by far the most popular character chess piece sets in the UK today.

They are almost certain that the chess pieces were made in Trondheim, Norway, in the 12th century.  Really it should come as no surprise that an ancient culture that enjoyed complex strategy games was brilliant at capturing new lands.  Now we know it was not just their axe swinging skills that helped them dominate the seas!
